9 Ridiculous Questions Kaduna People get Asked

by Joy Ajuluchukwu

That facial expression you see above would be yours when reading through the list.

For those who do not know, one of the reasons I started the blog, KnowKaduna was because of my experiences and the kind of questions I got asked whenever I said I lived in Kaduna. Out of curiosity, I asked our followers on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter for the questions they get asked once they share that they live in Kaduna and here’s a list.

If you live in Kaduna and have had to travel to other cities across Nigeria, I’m quite certain you have been asked at least 2 of these questions. Not all questions are actually ridiculous though.

1. How is your English so good?

Like many states in Nigeria, English is actually spoken widely in Kaduna State. Although Hausa is VERY common, if you find yourself in any business entity, office or just a casual place, chances are you would be speaking English. Kaduna city, the capital has more English speakers than the other local government areas.

2. “You have eateries in Kaduna?”

This particular question comes in different forms like, “Do you have Chicken Republic in Kaduna?” or “Do you have Mr Biggs in Kaduna?”. I can understand if one asks about a specific kind of eatery chain. I think that is fine but asking if eateries are in Kaduna is beyond me.

3. You Have an Airport in Kaduna?

I think this question is interesting and the fact that it was even asked during the Abuja airport closure makes it more interesting. Quite frankly, very few states do not have airports. Most states in Nigeria have airports. The Kaduna airport is decent and currently has international flights via Ethiopian Airways. In all fairness, considering how barely active the aviation sector most airports are unknown.

4. Are there Hotels in Kaduna?

This one weakened me. Haba!! There are hotels in Kaduna and ALL states in the country. That is all I have to say here. If you’re looking to visit the state, you can check out a few of the decent hotels in Kaduna at hotels.ng. If you need better recommendations, just send me a message and I’ll be happy to share.

5. Do you have “pure water” in Kaduna?

I don’t know if I should be even writing this down? Did the asker mean sachet water, refillable water eg CWAY or just clean water in general? I really don’t know but this is a part of our list.

6. Are there Modern Houses in Kaduna?

The question could be “do you live in mud houses”?

Kaduna is neither Abuja, Port-Harcourt nor Lagos but really? How do you ask this? Does the word “modern house” have a different definition though? Well, there are various kinds of houses in Kaduna from the mud houses all the way to concrete shelters. Here’s an idea of what it costs to live in Kaduna.

7. You don’t Stay in Abuja?

Okay. Okay. Okay. This is not a ridiculous question but one of the common questions people staying in Kaduna get is “you stay in Abuja?” I think there is a perception that people in Kaduna should act or behave a certain way and when they don’t, it is assumed that they are based in Abuja.

8. Are you Hausa?

There is a perception that Kaduna and the entire Northern Nigeria has only the Hausa tribe. Kaduna has over 40 tribes including Hausa. The state is quite diverse and beyond the indigenous tribes of Kaduna, you have EVERY SINGLE tribe in Nigeria represented and living here in Kaduna. ( (I don’t have research to back that claim but take my words 😊).

9. Are you Muslim?

In all fairness, this question is not so ridiculous as the major religion in Northern Nigeria is Islam. Even with my name as Joy, I’ve been asked a number of times if I was Muslim the moment I mention I live in Kaduna. Kaduna is a very diverse state and this is often overlooked. The first church in Northern Nigeria (ECWA) was in Zaria and till date, there are Hausas that are Christians. Also, the Southern Kaduna region also has a large number of people with the Christian faith.

I’m pretty sure that there are a few more questions that get asked. What have you been asked?
